Most building insulation decisions are made on cost per square metre, and on that measure aerogel loses to mineral wool every time. It is worth being straightforward about that. The situations where aerogel wins are the ones where thickness itself carries a cost that does not appear in the material comparison.
A listed facade that cannot be altered. An internal retrofit where 150 mm of insulation on every external wall would take a two-bedroom flat below the minimum room size. A balcony where the threshold level is fixed by the door. A tall building where combustible insulation is not permitted. In each of these, the real comparison is not against mineral wool, it is against not doing the work at all.

- Class A1 non-combustible, so it is usable where foam insulation is restricted by height
